I 16 – I 75 Interchange Reconstruction
Macon County, Georgia
This interchange reconstruction program improved the safety of the busy corridor by widening and reconstructing I 75 from Hardeman Avenue to Pierce Avenue and I 16 from I 75 to Walnut Creek within the City of Macon. The project improved each of the interstate highways by constructing wider shoulders, concrete barriers and, in most locations, additional lanes.
DECON designed five of the 31 bridges in the reconstruction program, which featured a Collector/ Distributor (CD) road system that was constructed parallel to both I 16 and I 75. Modifications were made to bridges and surface streets within the project area to accommodate the additional lanes and CD roads along I 16 and I 75. These improvements provide opportunities for turning movements and create additional storage for these turning movements.
Bridges in this program were designed based on Georgia Standard Specifications 2013 Edition, and 2016 Supplemental Specs. DECON executives’ 17-year history with this project proved valuable as they were able to apply their knowledge of the codes used during its original design phases to the current standards and codes. Their long history of successful projects with the Georgia Department of Transportation resulted in accurate designs that effectively integrated into the overall program to deliver the entire project on schedule.
