Critical environmental and hydraulic issues impacting a new pedestrian bridge across Suwanee Creek led DECON to develop a creative solution that allowed access of construction equipment without building approach ramps or disturbing the delicate environment.
To address these challenges, each of the structure’s four 120 FT spans were designed to be more like a vehicular bridge than a typical pedestrian bridge. This design solution involved using the existing Peachtree Boulevard bridge as a platform for the construction equipment to stay within the physical constraints. The substructure is reinforced concrete piers supported by concrete filled drilled shafts.
The partially pre-fabricated design of the new bridge helped meet environmental restraints, keep the project on schedule and maintain safe traffic flow during construction.
During schematic design, DECON recommended basic structural materials and systems, analyzed and developed conceptual design solutions, and prepared the preliminary bridge layout. Following approval of design development, DECON prepared final structural engineering calculations, drawings and specifications. This included detailed structural construction requirements for the project, a bill of quantities and construction specifications.
DECON’s creative response to ecological constraints resulted in a successful, in-budget design that responded to environmental concerns of the project.
