I 35 Highway Improvement
McLennan County, TX
Reconstruction and widening of I-35 from South 12th St. to North Loop 340 in Waco required a well-organized Traffic Control Plan (TCP) to maintain safety and accommodate continuing traffic. The six-mile-long program expanded the freeway from six to eight main lanes and realigned ramps and frontage roads.
DECON developed the TCP for the four-phase program, which encompassed highway repair and temporary entry/exit ramps from STA 245+00 to STA 345+00. DECON created three essential TCP’s: primary traffic control, a TCP-detour for main lanes traffic, and a temporary retaining wall. DECON reviewed and revised roadway design for some areas and adjusted road grading; added main lanes and frontage roads pavement markings, and the implementation of channelizing devices.
This program improved mobility and provided additional road capacity in this fast-growing area by expanding northbound and southbound lanes by one lane in each direction. DECON’S work reduced travel time during construction and enhanced safety through the effective use of signage and speed control.
